I Put a Record On

Released back in 2007, Gudrun Gut’s debut LP I Put a Record On is still haunting my iTunes Most Played collection. Her captivating debut pays homage to the 25 plus years that she has been an innovator in the underground electronic and rock music scenes of Berlin as wells as founding two influential record labels, Monika Enterprise and Moabit Musik. Pitchfork Magazine describes the style of Gut’s debut as implying “a good-humored Teutonic chic; smeary, grayscale hazes of techno and dub; and a dark, crackling energy,” and rightly so topped off with the darkly whispering sleek cherry seduction of her vocal stylings. An amalgam of different musical styles are effortlessly layered with this foray into post punk carnivalesque electronica that slips and slides in between genres with the greatest of ease. You may find yourself knee deep in old memories of Polaroid dreams after listening, or perhaps transported to the ancient future of your favorite dive bar. In any case, it will definitely take you somewhere so fire up those listening devices. Pleasure Boat Records is f#*king awesome!
It’s a little label out of Seattle, Washington that has been diligently releasing some of the most heady and pleasantly surprising electronic music of the last 4 years. An interesting philosophy of the label is to “support those who value music as a form of expression and communication as opposed to a series of social trends.” This progressive mindset is quite apparent in the varying styles of the artists who release on the label. Founder and label artist, Naturebot’s (Ian Price) own material has a tendency to take the listener on unbridled journey of sonic expression with extraordinarily mind bending tunes that tend to keep refocusing perspective so as to end up no where near where they began. The refreshingly captivating Capitol Island, released on the label in 2010 by Relcad (Alex Duff), has been noted by Dave Segal of The Stranger to be yet “another phenomenal excursion into unconventional dance music,” by the label and one “album [that] belongs in all techno lovers’ top 10 for ‘10.” Stay tuned for a future interview with Mr. Price where we’ll foray into the myriad musical stylings of the label’s artists and examine the importance of genre bending record labels like this one.
